BIOGRAPHY
As well as being a classically trained percussion and harpsichord player, Mathias Black also studied sound-science and video engineering at the Robert Schumann Academy in Düsseldorf.
After his graduation in 1989, he entered into the world of professional recording, performing art, music production and sound modelling. He has worked as producer, musician and engineer on several releases, commercials and radio features.
As a result of these activities, he has developed a uniquely
eclectic sound by using the mainfold possibilities of the studio as a distinguishing instrument.
Due to his working knowledge of new technologies, Mr Black was Invited to take part in the creation of the first mix mode CD “Chaos” in 1993. The CD, which was produced for the famous German musician and actor Herbert Grönemeyer, incorporated video, audio and multi media content.
In 2005 Mathias Black started lecturing at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK Berlin). He offers workshops on Auditory Media Design as part of the new Sound Studies – Acoustic Communication course.
He has been working on projects with Karl Bartos since 1998. Together they have built the unique aural manifestation of Bartos’ compositions. The latest results can be heard on the single release “Camera Obscura”, the soundtrack of “Moebius Redux - A Life In Pictures”, and on Bartos’ contribution to the art & fashion publication Visionaire: “0_1 The Binary Code”.
Technical director Mathias Black creates the imposing and forceful sound on the left side of the stage during live performances. He processes and mixes the tracks with real-time material in his sound studio – the so-called Klang Regie. Black also employs the vocoder, thus, giving the technique and technology a voice.
